Sheriff Joe’s Mini Gitmo: Local Enforcement out of Control

barbed wireRemember when "America's Toughest Sheriff" Joe Arpaio launched a reality tv show? When the FOX network gave a giant megaphone to a public official known for his anti-immigrant antics and racial profiling?

Well, Joe's back.  And his latest publicity stunt should horrify every American.

The seemingly unaccountable sheriff is getting ready to round up immigrant men and women and march them off to separate "tent cities" surrounded by electric fences, according to Imagine2050.net. The Maricopa County office announced the project in a statement entitled, "Arpaio Orders Move of Hundreds of Illegal Aliens to Their Own Tent City." Well we're fighting back.

We'll let you draw your own conclusions about why Joe wants to march immigrant detainees off to their own "Tent City," but this is the same guy who prioritizes press conferences and massive immigrant sweeps over prosecuting felons (there are 40,000 outstanding warrants in his county). The same guy who's had 2,700 lawsuits filed against him for civil rights and human rights abuses.

According to blogger Duke at The Sanctuary:

Having expanded his tent facility to house 2500 of the 10,000 inmates currently incarcerated in the county jail with a newly authorized $1.6 million dollar grant from the state, Arpaio vows to fill it with immigrant detainees.

Surrounded by an electrified fence that Joe jokes will be one that immigrants "won't want to scale," the tent facility will eventually become the new home for those caught in Arpaio's racial profiling roundups.

As usual, Arpaio has invited the press to document the hour long march in order fuel his colossal ego and need for constant media attention.

We've talked about how Sheriff Joe discriminates against Latinos in his county on the taxpayer's dime (download a PDF by the Immigration Policy Center), but this latest move is surprisingly vile.

Arpaio consistently pokes fun at the idea of protecting detainees' rights to due process and fair treatment. In response to the news that President Obama vowed to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center (Gitmo), Arpaio reportedly joked:

In a surprise move today, the outspoken and controversial Sheriff of Maricopa County,  Arizona, stated that he'd be happy to take the inmates of Gitmo and provide for them "appropriate and hospitable accommodations." When questioned in a press conference what those ‘appropriate' accommodations would entail, the spirited Sheriff was quoted as saying, "Oh, you'll find out. Our recidivism rate here is nearly zero."

If you haven't already, please sign our petition to have Arpaio investigated by the Department of Justice.

If you've signed it already, please help spread the word. While President Obama has moved quickly to work toward closing down Guatanamo and defending our nation's values, we can't have mini-Gitmos inside our borders.

I think Sheriff Joe is doing a GREAT job. I only wish more prisons and jails would follow suit. Illegal aliens need to be returned to where they came from. We had a deputy that was killed by 2 Illegal Mexicans, who had warrants out for their arrest, when he stopped to help them along the road one night they shot him and pushed his car down into a ravine. Break the Law….you should have NO rights! Come here illegally….you have no rights!

I live in Utah but most of my extended family is still in AZ, many in Maricopa county, and they’ve talked to me about him. It should be noted that my extended family is very large and includes many latinos and half-latinos. They support Joe’s tactics.

What Joe is doing is great, and the reason he gets voted in again at every election with a high percentage of the vote is because he gets the kinds of results that the people who actually live there want. It’s the people who live in his area that matter, not bleeding hearts in the rest of the country who want to give criminals better treatment, food, and accommodations than our soldiers in the middle-east get.

Joe metes out REAL punishments, which discourages prisoners in his country from doing anything to - no pun intended - warrant a re-arrest. In Maricopa, their quality of life in prison is less than it could ever possibly be on the outside in the U.S., WHICH IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE. The prison system is a PUNISHMENT, not a HOTEL CHAIN. They should not have the same rights as law-abiding citizens. However they still only have to endure conditions which are in fact superior to some very poor parts of third-world countries, and they are never denied basic survival and medical necessities, nor are they treated in any that is defined as torture by the standards of any country. They get three square meals, even if they don’t vary in type much. That’s more than what a lot of the world gets. In fact, bologna sandwiches would be a LUXURY in some parts of the world. Regardless, it’s such a negative experience for them (as it should be) that they either get out of Joe’s jurisdiction or they realize their error and stop committing crimes. Since it’s a Sheriffs job to reduce crime in a single county, either result is acceptable for him. You people here at “America’s Voice” (as if you speak for all of America, yeah right. And you accuse Joe of having an ego) are forgetting that illegal immigration is ALSO A FELONY CRIME, and people who commit such a crime should be treated no worse or no better than other types of felons. Just thought I should point that out yet again.

And about the fact that people get arrested for not having ID. Guess what, it is a requirement that you have ID on you if you are stopped by an officer while doing something which requires you to meet certain criteria. This includes drinking, DRIVING (YES DRIVING), or owning a firearm (especially concealed firearms). LATINOS DO THIS STUFF JUST AS MUCH AS NON-LATINOS.

HOWEVER, it is not a requirement for you to procure the ID if asked to do so by an officer of the law. If you dont have ID or just keep saying NO (like some big macho heroes try to do… get over yourself), the officer can (and probably will, unless you deal with them politely and charismatically) detain you. They cannot hold you for more than a couple days in most areas, but they most likely WILL detain you, and they are entitled to do so. Since officers will at least do everything they are legally allowed to do when it comes to enforcement, this is a given.

CARRY ALL YOUR ID, INCLUDING SSN OR VALID VISA, IN YOUR WALLET AT ALL TIMES, PROCURE IT WHEN ASKED, AND YOU WONT GET ARRESTED, LATINO OR NOT. SIMPLE AS THAT. IF YOU DON’T CARRY ID, ITS YOUR OWN FAULT. IF YOU DON’T HAVE ID BECAUSE YOU ENTERED THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY, IT’S YOUR OWN FAULT. DO NOT BLAME JOE FOR DOING HIS JOB. Every top-level law enforcement administrator in the world chooses a crime-prevention agenda to focus on, whether its drugs, gangs, or homicide, or robbery, what have you. Usually their choice relates to what has the highest rate in their jurisdiction. He’s in a south-border state. Logically it follows that he chose immigration since it has the highest rate by anyone’s measure, and 20% of other felony crimes in Maricopa are also committed by illegals. Getting rid of illegals reduces that other 20%. Don’t jump all over him for getting results. He has full bragging rights for accomplishing what he does within the budget that he does.

Also, you don’t see America’s Voice discussing how Joe now has prisoners caring for and raising abandoned animals, or working on farms learning basic agricultural skills, or working on chain gangs on projects that CONTRIBUTE to the community. How about it, AV? Tell us about the results he gets. Oh, and all those lawsuits you claim were filed against him? Yeah, tell us the percentage of those that are from whiny prisoners who think they should be pampered even more than old, gentle Mrs. Smith across the street from you? Felons can file lawsuits too, and it’s all too easy for them to do so. Also, please tell us how many of those lawsuits were dismissed.

Instead of just focusing on one side of the facts, give the reader both sides. Otherwise you are just another group of sensationalists pushing your political agenda with limited and skewed information.

“While President Obama has moved quickly to work toward closing down Guatanamo and defending our nation’s values, we can’t have mini-Gitmos inside our borders. “

Hmmm, as of 11/7/2009, Gitmo is still open. Yeah, B.O. is doing a great job - of running this great nation into the ground.

Collect the illegals, put them in containment, and make a 1x a month trip back south and drop them off. You are taking our jobs, costing us money, raising our taxes, demotivating our citizens. If you want to live in America, do it legally or get the hell out of my country.

The final bill included an amendment sponsored by House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) that addressed concerns of farmers who see the energy bill as a double whammy: higher energy prices and increased operations costs—if farmers were required to reduce their emissions. In the end, Peterson’s amendment passed, and farms—responsible for 6 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions—will not be forced to reduce emissions.
